ZONA is a dark ambient project in collaboration vwith Oksana Zabuzhko. I've used recorded material from the Planeta Polyn novel by Zabuzhko, which was spoken by the author at Meridian Czernowitz festival in 2012. Main topics of the album are combining the posthuman, postcomune, post-Choronobyl context of the lostness between the ideology and the truth. Zabuzko was clearly defined the topic of the mutezone, but there are three layers of the ZONE, the most visible is the topic of the Chornobyl Nuclear Plant Zone, the second one is the topic of the jail, as in postsoviet public culture ZONA is the word for Jail. Finally the Mutezone, our personal internal ZONEs, wasted land inside of our souls.

Challenge

At 006, I scheduled myself to do a few mixes with excerpts from Andrei Tarkovsky’s film “Stalker”. While the plan stood on stage with several pairs of demos … Six years ago I was lucky enough to be in the presentation of a new Oksana Zabuzhko book “From the map of books and people.” Zabuzhko read a passage about Kyiv on the day of Chernobyl disaster. The compositions included in the album “ZONE” date from different years, some contained in the original version – they did not need any changes. Most, however, were remixed and adapted to the text. The text became the thematic core, which implemented the idea. Each track is a little story, this collage of quotes of images, memories, stories, reflections, a mixture of the sounds of nature and sounds of the city, improvisation on grinding dosimeters, knocking heart rumble of trains, on which people have leave Kyiv – a key paraphrases related to the accident.
