The block City and Art on the Border aims to theorize a view of various artistic practices that existed in Lviv at the end of the 1980s. Implementing the model of "man - city - stories" and combining man (artist), urban environment (Lviv) and narratives as art and about art, the team tried to reveal the practices of artistic conceptualism of the 1980s and 1990s. One of the ideas of the block is to show the life and work of alternative artists of Lviv in the 1980s and 1990s through the format of video walks and stories with digitized collections of artists, analytical texts and video interviews of artists.

Challenge

A series of 10 films shot by our company under the supervision of Lviv researcher Bohdan Shumylovych, and directed by Olga Povoroznyk. Our team was engaged in the actual camera work for films. The peculiarity of the filming was in a certain improvised process. Since it was a bit difficult to schedule meetings with the artists in advance, we often adjusted to the artists' schedules and dealt with the locations on the spot accordingly. The essence of the films is to reveal artistic Lviv through the prism of a separate group of Lviv non-conformist artists who present Lviv's underground art space. In fact, the conversations were about places, not so much about the art of individual artists, but about which places created a special atmosphere for their work. Filming was conducted by two operators with field recording of dialogues. We spoke with Olena Turyanska, Andriy Sagaydakovskyi, George Kosovan, Serhiy Yakunin, Vlodko Kostyrko, Vlodko Kaufman, Antonina Denysiuk, Mykhailo Frantsuzov, Andriy Boyarov, Ihor Podolchak, Evgeny Ravskyi during the screening of the film.
